Contact Lens Exams

If you've noticed problems with your vision but don't want to wear glasses, or if you've worn glasses for years and thought about switching to contact lenses. You will first need to schedule a contact lens exam. These exams are more involved than a typical eye exam.

Eye Measurements

For example, to ensure that the contact lenses fit a patient's eyes properly, the doctor will use several special machines to measure several aspects of the eyes. While some may be familiar to a patient who has participated in standard eye exams, there might be an unfamiliar machine or technique. These machines don't physically touch the eyes but rely on focused light to take the necessary measurements.

The optometrist can recommend contact lenses using these measurements and the results of a standard eye exam. There are several types of contact lenses, and only some may be right for some patients.

Type of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Different shapes and sizes are meant to fit the different shapes and sizes of people's eyes. Like other facial features, each person has a unique size and shape to their lenses and eyeballs, making it necessary to fit a pair of contact lenses exactly, just as different people need different clothing or shoes.

Of course, the optometrist will also want to ensure that the contact lenses you have selected together are comfortable and that you know how to take them in and out without damaging your eyes. If you have never worn contact lenses before, or if it has been a while since you last wore contacts, a fitting lens appointment is usually included and performed along with the contact lens exam. Our office staff typically does these fittings with trial lenses for free.
